Fall Tune-Up Checklist: Get Your Bike Winter-Ready in Jersey City
Fall is the best time to be a bike shop customer. Summer mileage is in your legs, the Hudson County air finally cools off, and your bike is telling you exactly what it needs — if you know how to listen. Here's the checklist our mechanics run through every October, and what you can check yourself before you bring it in.
1. Drivetrain: the summer grime has to go
Months of PATH-commute grit, waterfront salt spray, and park-loop dust live in your chain and cassette. A worn chain chews through cassettes and chainrings — the $30 part becomes the $300 repair. If your chain skips under load, it's already past due. Our Deep Clean ($249) is built for exactly this: full drivetrain degrease, frame and wheel wash, the works.
2. Brakes: shorter days, wetter streets
Jersey City streets get slick by late October. Check pad wear (replace at 1mm or less), listen for grinding, and squeeze hard — spongy levers mean air in the line or stretched cables. Brakes are the one system we never tell anyone to "wait on."
3. Tires: flats love cold weather
Cold drops your pressure and old rubber cracks. If you flatted twice this summer, your tires are done. Fresh rubber + a spare tube in your bag beats walking home from the Light Rail in November.
4. The bolt check (free, takes 5 minutes)
Stem, handlebar, seatpost, wheels, crank arms. If it moves and shouldn't, it needs a torque wrench — not a guess. Bring it by and we'll run it down while you wait.
5. Lights and reflectors
You're riding home in the dark now. A front light, a rear blinker, and a charged battery are non-negotiable on Newark Ave after 6 PM.
6. Winter storage vs. winter riding
Riding through? Fenders, wet lube, and a post-ride wipe-down keep salt off your frame. Parking it until spring? We do winter storage — cleaned, lubed, and hung up right, so April you is grateful. (See our storage service page for details.)
When to let us handle it
Our mechanics do this all day, every day — tune-ups that actually fix your bike, not just adjust it. The Essential Tune ($149) covers the full checklist above; the Pro Tune ($499) adds tubes, tires, and brake pads. Most service is same-day or next-day. As one recent reviewer put it: an inner tube replaced "in 20 min same day."
Book online, call (551) 229-7894, or roll up to 231 Pavonia Ave in Hamilton Park — Tue–Fri 10–7, Sat 9–5, Sun 9–3.
P.S. — Riding stronger next season starts with position, not parts. Our Professional Bike Fitting event is Sunday, October 18 ($249, limited slots). Get the bike right first, then get yourself fitted to it.
